“Optimist: someone who figures that taking a step backward after taking a step forward is not a disaster, it’s more like a cha-cha.” Robert Brault

Last week I hosted a workshop inside The After Party (the monthly membership available to everyone after TRANSFORM: Body + Mind) all about The Positivity Edge (but like, grounded in real life). If you caught that, you might enjoy a summary of the biggest takeaways today and if you missed it, I'm hoping today's newsletter leaves you feeling hopeful, more in control of your life, and normal! Mindset is something we could all make some progress with.

Happiness researchers (yes, that's really a job) have concluded a few really important things we now get to take and try on for ourselves. Those who report being most successful in achieving their goals (be it health goals, financial goals, relationship goals) were found to spend most of their thinking time on what they want and how to get it. Goals, priorities, their own actions, their own behaviors, you get the idea. This can be classified as "positive thinking". Those who report having difficulty achieving or maintaining their goals were found to spend a large amount of time thinking about what they don't want, things that make them sad, angry or frustrated, past events they can't control and who to blame for various things. This is referred to as "negative thinking". The best part? We're not destined to be positive or negative thinkers. We can actually shift our thinking at any time in our life.

Whoa! Right? But also ... makes sense. When we adopt more positive thinking, we tend to take more positive action and tend to get more positive results -- a.k.a. achieve our goals. We also just feel a heck of a lot better more often. Not a bad 'side effect'.

Just so we're clear, I'm saying in order to achieve and maintain your health + body composition goals, shifting to a more positive mindset will be an important factor (if not THE MOST important factor).

"Great, Tara. But how do I do that? And also, WTF? Do you live on planet Earth?"

Let me share some tips. And the last few ones really address the fact that this DOES NOT mean it's gonna be all rainbows + butterflies + well-behaved kids all the time. ;-)

1. Positive health habits. Come on, you saw that one coming from a mile away. LOL But it really does affect your ability to keep the right mindset and build momentum on your goals. Focus on the biggest needle-movers first and most: sleep, nutrition, fitness, movement, sunshine / nature, rest + relaxation + fun. As Vince Lombardi says, "Fatigue makes cowards of us all."

2. Positive self talk. Tune into your inner dialogue. Did the mean girls take over? Kick them out. Use affirmations like "I can do this", "I like myself" or even "I'm learning to like + care for myself". Add the word "yet" when you say things like, "I can't do this" or "I don't know how". I can't do this YET. I don't know how YET.

3. Positive people. As much as you can, reduce or eliminate the negative people in your life (or at least the amount of interactions you have with them). ADD positive people in. This could mean you spend more time with a friend you find really uplifting and less time with a friend that tends to drag you down. It could mean that you connect with positive people on social media who are making something out of their life or working on similar goals. It could mean that you join a new volunteer project, book club, dance class, or anything where you're drawn to the energy of the other people.

4. Positive visualization. There's another workshop in The After Party that I want those of you who are in it to go check out. It's a visualization workshop from back in the Fall. Otherwise, here's what I want you to do: see your goals as if they are already accomplished. Picture a year from now in the best way possible, dreaming so big it might embarrass you to say it out loud. Imagine all the details -- what time do you wake up? What do you put on? How do you feel? What do you do in the mornings? What do you eat? Replay this over and over like a movie. You control the movie in your mind and you won't be able to help but to start to ACT like her (or him).

5. Positive content. No news on in the background. No social media accounts that make you feel crappy about yourself. Fill that space instead with accounts, books, articles that are educational, inspirational, funny or uplifting. You still get to watch your Bravo TV and read your trashy novels. That's just for fun, right? But make sure you're taking inventory on what you're inputting the rest of the time. Dedicate time to consuming things that help you become better and more effective, whatever you want that to mean for you. It does pretty incredible things for our confidence.

6. Positive outlook with a realistic lens. Be prepared for the best to happen. Be prepared to achieve your goals and then some. Be prepared for your meeting or your day or that conversation to go really well. There is more chance it actually will. And if it doesn't, that's ok too and was always one of the possibilities.

7. Be aware of your negative bias. If you have a really bad 5 minutes in your day, do you say it was a bad day? If your day was pretty crappy except for 5 really good minutes, would you classify that as a good day? Most of us -- because of the way we were wired for survival -- overemphasize the bad and tend to not linger too long on the good. As humans, w can expect the full spectrum of human emotions (happy, excited, joyful, love, and also anger, frustration, despair, guilt...). We can also assume sometimes we are going to get sick, our kids are going to get sick, we're going to get a flat tire, there will be terrible and unexpected traffic, some big appliance in the house will break at the worst time, we'll lose power, etc. Even though we don't know when those things are coming, we know they're coming! Just all part of the human experience. How well would you like to be able to roll with the punches? How do you want to show up on the sunny days? And how about on the rainy days?

8. Negative emotions are in for dinner and out by dessert. We all experience the negative suite of emotions but often we fear those emotions and repress them, never fully allowing them to move through us. Invite your negative emotions to the table. They get a seat too. Feel them, explore them, cry, yell on purpose, sing, dance, vent to a friend, journal ... and then kick them out before dessert. You can even set a timer here. Give yourself 5-10 minutes to wallow in that self pity but when you hear the ding, it's time to move on.

9. Lean on gratitude. You cannot feel a negative emotion and gratitude at the same time so use that to your advantage! If you need to move past some negative stuff after allowing yourself to feel it, start thinking about or writing down the things you're grateful for in this very moment. Be specific as that impacts our mindset the most. Rather than say, "I'm grateful for my family and friends.", say, "I'm grateful that I was able to take a walk this morning with my kids out in the sunshine."

10. Always find a win and when you can't, make sure you do. Seriously! If you can't find a win, challenge yourself even harder to find something you're proud of or something good in the situation, even if tiny. Maybe you didn't stick to your nutrition or fitness goals AT ALL today, but did you go to bed at a good time or drink some water? Maybe you haven't noticed signs of fat loss yet but has your energy improved? Maybe you got a flat and have to wait for AAA to come while everyone is waiting for you to come home and set up for your daughter's birthday party but do you now have an unexpected 30 minutes of 'me time' in the car? (Based on a true story. LOL) Training yourself to find wins -- especially when they're not so obvious -- is like training your muscles. You'll get stronger with more reps.

And with that, go have yourself an awesome day!!

XO,
Tara

P.S. TLDR: Having a positive mind is one of the most important factors that determine whether or not you can achieve your goals. You can be a positive person and still live in the real world and be a human with the full spectrum of human emotions. Mindset isn't fixed and can be upgraded. You got this!

10 healthy things I'm keeping up with this summer ... and 3 I'm not

Summer Lovin' sometimes ends up becoming Summer Everything-fell-by-the-wayside.

With the kids home from school all summer, it can be a lot more challenging to stick to a routine. Today I'm sharing 10 things that I'm proud to say kept their presence in my days and weeks this summer ... and 3 that I was hoping would but definitely did NOT.

1. Morning sun. Most days I've been getting outside even before my early morning workout but on the days I haven't, I've been out shortly thereafter. This is perfect because anything that helps boost mood, energy, improve sleep quality, balance blood sugar, rev up metabolism -- and is FREE -- I wanna be taking advantage of!

2. Grounding. This involves touching nature. I know that sounds weird, but gardening, walking on the grass or sand and getting caught in the rain all count. This has cardio-protective benefits and boosts our feel food neuromodulators (helps with mood and energy as well). Since I'm almost always barefoot around my house, this has been really easy to sneak in with the morning sun. I just step outside without putting on shoes.

3. Strength training. This is one of the most potent anti-aging and metabolism-boosting tools we have at our disposal. I have kept up with my workouts even when it's meant moving them around or shuffling the schedule as needed.

4. Sleep. Every night I've gotten at least some sleep. Do I get a trophy? HAHA j/k. But the truth is even when I've gotten off track because I was up late working a bunch, we got home at 1 AM from a Billy Joel concert, we watched 2 episodes of Severance instead of the 1 we had planned, or the kids were up and in our bed a bazillion times, I have been on top of making sure sleep rises higher on the priority list again within a reasonable amount of time.

5. PFF meals. Even when I've had to pack grab-and-go options this summer (we're constantly on the go!), I have been sure to include protein, fat, and fiber in probably 95% or so of my meals and in the por that my body needs. This has been such an important staple as I've reversed my PCOS, prediabetes, and hypothyroidism and has helped me feel my best + strongest now at 39 than ever before.

6. Hydration. Ok, so this used to always be a weakness for me but this summer I feel like a hydrated Queen ... or at least just not like I'm a walking dessert surrounded by skin anymore. :-P

7. Electrolytes. So it may be cheating that I'm giving this one it's own spot on the list because it's technically part of the hydration bit, but I feel so much better when I'm replacing some electrolytes each day. We can get this through our food if we're intentional about it or make it ourselves, but I've been using a pre-made version called ReLyte (not an ad) and I just tailor the amount I use to what I need for that day.

8. Oral hygiene. I'm not even sure I should be giving myself credit for this but I always tell you guys to celebrate every little victory so I'm gonna walk the talk here. It's floss-then tongue scrape- then brush with a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste and even though it only takes a few minutes, I never skip it ... even if I'm away. (Oh ... what's it like to be away? It's been SO LONG for me! LOL)

9. Supplements. There's a reason I share some of what I take and not "a day of supplements" or anything. It's because I take different things based on my unique needs and it switches up depending on things like where I'm at in my cycle, when I want to take a 'supplement holiday' from certain things at certain times, or I may run out of something. Haha. But I have this habit of kicking off my breakfast-making by taking my morning supplements. It's automatic now and as such, it shows up even when I'm a chicken with my head cut off.

10. Positive self talk. It's still, "I'm juicier now" rather than "I'm gross + bloated now". It's "that was more food than what feels comfortable in my body" rather than, "I can't believe I overate again." The cool thing about this is that while it takes lots of practice, it doesn't require any additional time.

Ok, so now onto what has fallen by the wayside a bit this summer ....

1. The sauna. I was getting 2-3+ sessions per week in when the kids were in school, but have only gotten in 2-3 sessions this whole summer so far. It's cool. I'll get back into it when they return to school as I have a good rhythm of fitting it in after my workout and after I get them off to school but before my shower. I start my work day from the sauna to save time (more habit stacking!).

2. Daily walks. See above. I've been very active (mostly cleaning up and chasing after the kids), but there haven't been official daily or even near daily walks. I'm not upset about this though as I tend to need the walks a lot more when they are in school and I could otherwise find myself sitting and working for long stretches. So ... September is the walking comeback!

3. Unwinding. Ok, so this is the only one of the 3 that I am actually not too thrilled with myself about. Back in the day I used to have VERY high cortisol levels. I am someone that needs even just 10-20 minutes of unwinding each day (read, bath, meditate, journal, etc.) and it's been barely there this summer. The excuse is that I was creating and taking a pre-launch group through a brand new course that I created AND a brand new monthly membership app I created while still running all other aspects of my business and being mama-without-childcare. And that's all true and understandable! But I'm no good to anyone if I burn out, so this one needs to improve ASAP. I'm gonna start with a mandatory 5 minutes of unwinding before bed. If I can't fit in 5 minutes, what am I even doing?!

Maybe this email included more details than you ever wanted to know about me. HAHA. Or maybe you find it helpful to see what I prioritize and how I plan to get back on track with some things.

Oh, and speaking of that course I created (shameless plug incoming), the cart will open in LESS THAN 24 HOURS to sign up for it! It's called TRANSFORM: Body + Mind and is a 28-day metabolism-boosting course for those with fat loss, muscle-building, and / or "toning up" goals who also want to improve their relationship with food + their body. We do all of this while optimizing health because I don't believe any other way makes sense. If you're not yet on the waitlist, hop on now .... quickly! I'll be pulling the waitlist down later today but if you get on there before, you'll get a discount code when the cart opens tomorrow.

Pleasure + Pain (and how to tap into their potential to change your habits)

Pleasure + Pain (nope, not a kinky email. Don't worry!)

Did you know that we are wired to seek out pleasure and avoid pain? That means some interesting things happen in the presence of either. IN THIS VIDEO I explain why this matters to anyone interested in optimizing their health and habits. More importantly, I tell you exactly how to start using this to your benefit!

Do you plan to start utilizing this strategy? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

XO,
Tara

The world is reeling...

The world is reeling...

Twenty twenty has been off to an interesting start, to say the least. And as we're pushed beyond the sharp edges of our comfort levels in what seems like ALL areas, we must choose to learn and grow from it all. Without that very deliberate and often tricky decision, we will merely wallow in self-pity and sorrow for others. Rather than wallow, let's let it in, feel it, and move through it.

Let's move to awareness.
Listening.
Action.
Hope.
Help.
Community.
Momentum.
Resilience.
Strength.

In all areas. In all we've been experiencing.

And if you know anything about me, you know I'm the biggest believer that everything starts with us. If we are taking care of our physical and mental health, we are able to focus on our needs and the needs of our family, friends, and community.

If we are energetic and vibrant and confident, our voices get a little louder. Our hobbies creep back in. Our family sees more smiles out of us. We stand up for what we believe in. If we are healthy and glowing, we can be better leaders, more productive, calm and kind. We can volunteer. We can take an extra few minutes to give the better answer to our kids' complicated questions. With greater health comes greater capacity - we can love all over others.

Today, I want to remind you of this one thing: taking care of your physical and mental health so you can be that elevated version of yourself is something you get to have power over right now.

So while some will say this is not the time to focus on you, I offer the opposite perspective. This is not the time to take the focus OFF of you as you are needed now more than ever, regardless of how that is showing up in your life. This year has rocked our worlds - every single one of us. I know you're needed. Whatever your role, do it with magic. And how can you be magic when you don't feel magical?

  • Upgrade your habits one by one.

  • Sleep, seriously. Please sleep.

  • Eat well, balanced, and not more than your body needs. Most of our chronic disease comes from excess.

  • Move your beautiful body.

  • And learn some tricks for dealing with stress. You might be 'Type A' like me or easily wound-up, but you can teach yourself to become much less reactive through mindfulness and breathing protocols. It's a change worth making. I promise.

If you need help with the specifics of any of this, let me know. I'm here to help YOU.

Peace + love,
Tara

P.S. Come say "hi" on Instagram. I was muted & listening for a week to stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter as I shared resources and many beautiful voices and perspectives of people of color. And now I'm back doing what I do best - focusing on healthy bodies and minds for everyone. I share my workouts, tips, recipes, and answer every single (appropriate) DM. I'd love to connect with you over there.

Does your timeline need to go?

Does your timeline need to go??

The holidays are upon us and everyone and their mothers are talking about having a snack before you leave the house so you won't overindulge at the holiday party.

It's not that that advice is bad, but just that its probably something you hear a million times - especially this time of year, am I right?!?

I want to share a less popular opinion about how you can stick to your goals during the busy holiday season. And it has nothing to do with snacks...and everything to do with your unrealistic timeline.

By the way, did you know that the version of you that you can SEE and FEEL today is the result of the habits you had 2, 3, 6, 9 months ago?! It's true. There is a huge lag time in your habits and the outcomes showing up.

I'm talking about both of these topics and how they are related in my latest Workshop Wednesday video (below).

For those of you here in the United States (where I live), Happy Thanksgiving!! Enjoy it. No guilt about food. No playing small or letting others make you feel crappy at the dinner table. You do you. Are you a kind person? Awesome. Beyond that, your life and decisions are none of their business. ;-) (Just a reminder for those that have trouble on this holiday. It's pretty common).

XO,
Tara

P.S. Are you in need of a last-minute / healthified / gluten-free / dairy-free / DELICIOUS dessert to make for the holiday? I've gotcha covered! My new cookbook, Smart Cookie: Healthified Holiday Desserts, is available and full of all kinds of recipes (42 of them!). There are lots of baked goods, but also plenty that involve the slow cooker, stovetop, or are NO BAKE. It's instantly downloadable and printable, so no waiting for the Amazon delivery person. ;-) GRAB YOUR COPY HERE.

Pain + Pleasure: The secret ingredient to your health / body goals

What do PAIN + PLEASURE have to do with your health / body goals?

Lots! Everything, you might say.

Have you ever noticed how there are certain things that just don't ever end up on your to do list, but happen often anyway? Things like eating food, sex, and sleep. Why are these some of the exceptions? It all comes down to pain vs. pleasure when talking about curating the lifestyle you want for yourself.

Check out my latest Workshop Wednesday video where I break it down and give you a few specific examples of how to apply this concept to your goals.

Oh, and welcome to November! It's the start of my favorite 'recipe season'. ;-)

XO,
Tara

Can I help you create an exercise HABIT?!

Remember when you said you'd workout more often?

Maybe it was December 31, 2018 when you made that proclamation. Maybe it's been on your to do list for a decade? Or maybe, maybe you've recently decided that exercise (or ANYthing else) needs to be a part of your life in a more meaningful way.

We talk a lot about habits here at Tara Allen Health. My clients know alllll about habits as we work on breaking up with old ones and implementing new ones to create the health, body and lifestyle that aligns with their dreams.

Where are my DIYers out there? Today I want to get really tactical with you on how to start this process for yourself. There are 4 parts of a habit, and therefore, 4 steps to creating a new habit that will actually (seriously) stick.

And THAT, you guys, gets me very excited.

First, check out this video from last week all about the 4-step process. It has all the tangible advice you need to know to get started on creating whatever new habit you'd like in your life.

Then - for extra credit ;-) - check out THIS video that I posted inside my private facebook group as a follow-up. It will teach you why you can't seem to stick to a "diet" or plan even when you *know* what you should be doing. Better yet, it teaches you exactly how to work WITH the way your brain is wired so you can make progress and reach your goals. YES, YOU! It's about freakin' time, isn't it?

Side note: I mention my upcoming healthified holiday dessert cookbook coming in early November (so soon!) in the beginning of that video. I am SOOOOO excited to put this thing out in the world after dreaming about it for YEARS and working on it for just as long. Hard work usually happens when no one's looking. It happens when no one's there to give you credit. The results of your hard work usually come along much further down the road. Does this sound at all like what we talk about with our health + body transformation goals?! ;-)

I will keep you posted very soon!

Tara

You don't need more willpower!

Have you been blaming WILL?

Good ol' Will…as in, WILLPOWER…tends to get a bad rap.

Everyone's looking for it. No one has enough. Everyone wants to 'find' more or create more. People are throwing their goals and dreams to the wayside all the while blaming their lack of willpower.

If you've ever found yourself saying, "If I only had more willpower…", then I'm glad this email found you today!

Willpower is actually a limited resource. Meaning, we run out of it fairly quickly due to all of the decisions we go through in a typical day. Those that are killin' it with their goals, getting healthy, fit, and strong all around you - they DO NOT have any more willpower than you do.

Let me say that again…successful people do not have more willpower than you.

So what's the secret? It's actually all about neural pathways. In the non-nerd world, it's also known as HABITS.

Check out my latest Workshop Wednesday video in which I tell you exactly how to make progress towards your goals without needing any willpower. Oh, and have you noticed what's different about my videos these days? They're shorter!! Hallelujah! I've been condensing my videos by shutting up sooner so it's more feasible for you to watch / listen on a weekly basis. ;-)

If you're liking the new, shorter videos, would you do me a favor and hit "reply" to this email and let me know? Of course if you'd rather I babble on forever about your favorite topics, let me know that too. I'm always looking for your feedback so I can best support you in your health & weight loss journey.

In good health,

Tara

P.S. If you need a weekly dose of weight loss and wellness tips, tools, and resources in your life, let’s do it! Join my email list and let me treat you like the VIP you are!

Your goals are set. Now what?!?

Don't wait for motivation to 'strike'!

Have you ever entered a new year (like right now) with tons of great intention, motivation, and a list of things you want to magically change about yourself or your routines?  And then something derails your progress a day, a week, or a month in?  Or you're making so many changes at once it becomes impossible to get them all straight?

I've been there!  In fact, I'm the queen of lists and dreaming big and taking on wayyy more than I can manage (sanely, anyway).

My latest Workshop Wednesday video was all about how choose where to focus and how to not rely on feeling motivated to do so. The truth is, successful people are no more motivated than you or I.  Successful people just implement a plan that involves taking action regardless of motivation being present or not.  The specific tactic I get into in the video is called The Domino Effect. If you have been nerding out on goals and creating new habits lately, you're going to want to check out this video!

Happy New Year!

In good health and holiday cheer,

Tara

How to achieve ANY goal you have!

Do you want to lose weight? Do you wish you could eat better more consistently? Have you been putting off your workouts?

In the video below, I share everything you need to know to break down ANY goal you have into action steps and daily practices. I discuss The Habit Loop and The Cycle that you can apply to any area of your life that you’re looking to upgrade.

**Warning: The video gets wonky around minute 4 but then picks up around minute 7 or so. This was a livestream and my internet connection was poor. However, you don’t miss much at all (what the heck was I talking about for those 3 minutes, anyway?!?) and I believe you will gain so much from watching this if you are looking to achieve something in particular.

If you are not on my email list, hop on ASAP so you can receive the companion worksheet I mentioned that’s heading to an inbox near you on Tuesday, October 23, 2018. :-) Sign up right here!

In good health,

Tara

When WILLPOWER has left the building!

Hey you...yeah you!  Remember that time that you held back on your anger so as to avoid a fight with your coworker / spouse / child and then dove headfirst into a box of donuts without coming up for air?  Yeah...that's willpower being used up.  YOU are not broken.  NO ONE has unlimited willpower!

Watch this video for more about willpower and for a tip that you can implement today to start making your willpower work more for you and achieve the goals that you've set out to achieve.

Hint: Goal-setting, habits, and practice are the key.  ;-)

In good health,

Tara
